Pull and review your credit reports

Start by reviewing reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Look for incorrect balances, accounts that are not yours, outdated negative items, duplicate accounts, and wrong personal information.

    • Experian report
    • Equifax report
    • TransUnion report
    • Account numbers, dates, balances, and collector names

Use the right letter for the problem

A credit bureau dispute challenges information on a credit report. A debt validation letter asks a collector for proof of a debt. A goodwill letter asks a creditor to consider removing a late payment as a courtesy.

    • Credit bureau dispute letter
    • Debt validation letter
    • Goodwill adjustment letter
    • Pay-for-delete negotiation letter

    Include documentation and clear requests

Effective letters identify the account, explain the disputed issue, include supporting documents, and clearly state what correction or validation is requested.

    • Government ID and proof of address when needed
    • Billing statements or payment records
    • Police report or FTC report for identity theft
    • Certified mail tracking when appropriate

    Track responses and follow up

Keep copies of letters, mail receipts, bureau responses, and collector replies. Follow-up letters may be needed when information is not corrected or when a collector fails to validate a debt.

    • Mailing dates
    • Certified mail receipts
    • Investigation results
    • Next-round dispute or response letter
