Michigan Child Support Estimator
A rough monthly range, in plain English, before you talk to the Friend of the Court.
This is not the court's calculation. It's a simplified educational estimate. The official amount comes from the Michigan Child Support Formula as applied by the Friend of the Court and the judge, which uses detailed income rules. For an official-style figure, use the State of Michigan's MiChildSupport calculator.

Common questions
How is child support calculated in Michigan?
Michigan uses the Michigan Child Support Formula. It starts with both parents' net incomes, estimates the cost of raising the children, splits it by each parent's share of income, and then adjusts for overnights with each parent, childcare, and health insurance.
What is the Friend of the Court (FOC)?
The Friend of the Court is the office in each Michigan circuit court that investigates custody and support, calculates recommended support under the state formula, and helps enforce orders. Every county has one — for example, the St. Clair County FOC is in Port Huron and the Macomb County FOC is in Mount Clemens.
Is this the same as the Friend of the Court calculation?
No. This is a simplified educational estimate. The official calculation uses detailed income rules and tables, and the court can deviate from it. Use the state's MiChildSupport calculator or ask your Friend of the Court for an official figure.
How do overnights affect child support in Michigan?
The formula includes a parenting-time adjustment. The more overnights the paying parent has, the lower their support — the effect grows quickly as overnights approach equal time.
Can child support be changed?
Yes. Either parent can ask the Friend of the Court for a review (generally every 36 months) or file a motion to modify when circumstances change substantially.
What if the other parent is not paying?
The Friend of the Court can enforce support through income withholding, tax-refund interception, license suspension, and contempt proceedings. You can also file your own motion — we prepare the paperwork from your information.
Can Clear Path prepare child support paperwork?
