    Michigan Resident Agent Lookup

Every Michigan LLC and corporation has to name someone who can be handed a lawsuit. That name and address are public — here is how to find them.

    Quick Answer

How do I find a Michigan company's registered agent?

Search the company in LARA's free Business Entity Search, open its record, and read the resident agent name and registered office address. Michigan requires every LLC and corporation to keep a resident agent with a physical Michigan street address on file, and that record is public. If the listed address is out of date, legal papers sent there can be missed — which is how businesses end up with default judgments.

    What a resident agent is

Michigan calls it a resident agent; most other states call the same role a registered agent. The agent is the person or company legally designated to receive service of process — lawsuits, subpoenas, garnishments — plus official notices from the state, on behalf of the business.

    • Must have a physical Michigan street address, called the registered office
    • Can be an individual resident, the owner, or a commercial agent service
    • A PO box or mailbox store address is not acceptable as the registered office
    • The agent must be available during normal business hours to accept delivery

    How to look one up

The lookup is free and takes under a minute, and it works for any Michigan LLC, corporation, or registered foreign entity.

    • Search the company's legal name in LARA's Business Entity Search
    • Open the matching record — check the entity type and status while you are there
    • Read the resident agent name and the registered office address
    • The filing history shows when the agent was last changed, which tells you how current it is

    Why people look this up

Almost everyone searching for an agent has a document they need to deliver, or a company they need to confirm is real.

    • Serving a lawsuit, small claims complaint, or eviction papers on a business
    • Sending a formal demand letter where proof of proper delivery matters
    • Due diligence before signing a lease, contract, or large purchase order
    • Checking your own record after moving offices or changing agent services

When the listed agent is wrong or gone

Agent records go stale constantly. A resigned agent, a moved office, or an owner who used a home address they no longer live at all have the same effect: the notice never arrives, and the case moves on without the business.

    • Michigan allows an agent to resign, and the entity must name a replacement
    • If service cannot be completed at the registered office, other statutory methods may be available
    • Check the filing history for a recent change before assuming the address is current
    • If it is your own business, fix the record before your next legal notice is sent

Changing or becoming a resident agent

Updating the record is a short filing, not a formation amendment. What matters is doing it before something important is mailed to the old address.

    • File a Certificate of Change of Registered Office and/or Resident Agent with LARA
    • You can act as your own agent if you have a Michigan street address and are available during business hours
    • Using a commercial agent keeps your home address off the public record
    • Clear Path offers Michigan resident agent service and prepares the change filings
