Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a medical exam before filing I-485?
Since 2024, USCIS requires Form I-693 (medical) to be submitted with the I-485 or at interview. It must be signed by a USCIS-designated civil surgeon (Michigan has ~140 designated civil surgeons — searchable at uscis.gov/tools/find-a-civil-surgeon).
Can I work while my I-485 is pending?
Yes, once USCIS approves the I-765 filed with your I-485 (typically 3–7 months). The Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is a physical card mailed to you and is valid for 2 years, renewable if the I-485 stays pending.
Can I travel outside the U.S. while I-485 is pending?
Not without an approved Advance Parole document (I-131). Leaving the country while I-485 is pending without Advance Parole is treated as abandonment of the application. Advance Parole typically approves alongside the EAD in 3–7 months.
