Quick Answer
How do you get an ITIN?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is issued by the IRS to people who must file or be listed on a U.S. tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security number. You apply on IRS Form W-7, normally attached to the tax return you are filing, with original or certified-copy identity and foreign-status documents — a valid passport is the single document that can satisfy both requirements. There is no IRS fee for Form W-7. Clear Path Document Services prepares the form and document checklist; we are not attorneys, CPAs, or tax advisors.
Important: Clear Path Document Services is a document preparation and filing-assistance service — not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice, attorney representation, or create attorney-client relationships. All documents are prepared based on information you provide for educational and administrative purposes.Read full disclaimer.

What does it cost?
Government filing fees are paid to USCIS or the IRS, not to us. Our preparation fee is separate and is quoted in writing after we review your situation — nothing is purchased online.
- IRS fee for Form W-7
- None
- Certified copies from the issuing agency
- Cost set by that agency
- Certifying Acceptance Agent or IRS appointment
- Optional alternative to mailing originals
- Clear Path preparation fee
- Quoted in writing after review
Government fees change. Always confirm the current amount on the official agency website before you file — we include the current figures in your filing instructions.
What we prepare for you
Form W-7 preparation
The current form edition completed from your information, with your name, foreign address, and treaty details entered consistently with your supporting documents.
Reason-for-applying review
We walk through the lettered reasons on the form with you so the box you check matches the documents you are attaching.
Document checklist
Which identity and foreign-status documents the IRS accepts, which need certification, and what a certified copy actually has to look like.
Renewal check
If you already had an ITIN that expired from non-use or has middle digits the IRS retired, we prepare the renewal on the same form.
Filing instructions
Where the packet goes, how it attaches to your tax return, what happens to mailed originals, and the acceptance-agent alternative.
One correction round
After you review the draft, we make one round of corrections before you file.
What we do not do
- Preparing your tax return or giving tax advice — talk to a CPA or enrolled agent
- Certifying your documents — we are not a Certifying Acceptance Agent
- Advice about your immigration status or whether an ITIN affects it
- Representing you before the IRS
- Any promise or prediction about approval or timing
What documents do you need to get started?
- A valid, unexpired passport if you have one — it can prove both identity and foreign status
- If no passport: two documents from the IRS accepted list, such as a national ID card and birth certificate
- The tax return the W-7 will be attached to, if one applies
- Any prior ITIN assignment letter if you are renewing
- For a dependent: proof of U.S. residency where the IRS requires it
- Your current foreign and U.S. mailing addresses

How the process works
- 1
Tell us why you need an ITIN
Filing a return, being claimed as a dependent or spouse, a treaty benefit, or a renewal — the reason shapes the paperwork.
- 2
We review and quote
We confirm which documents you have and send a written price and turnaround. Nothing is purchased online.
- 3
We prepare the packet
Form W-7 completed, document checklist built, cover sheet and filing instructions written.
- 4
You review and sign
You read the form, we make one round of corrections, and you sign.
- 5
You file
Mail the packet to the IRS ITIN operation, or take it to a Certifying Acceptance Agent or an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center so you do not mail original documents.
When you should talk to an immigration attorney
Some situations need legal judgment, not paperwork help. Call us anyway — we will tell you honestly whether document preparation fits, and point you toward an independent attorney when it does not.
- You need advice on whether to file a return at all, or on treaty benefits
- You have unfiled prior-year returns or an IRS notice
- You are worried about how an ITIN interacts with your immigration situation
- Your prior ITIN application was rejected and you do not know why
- You are being asked for an ITIN by an employer — that is usually the wrong document, so get advice
