Bill of Sale & Title Transfer

Boat, Trailer & ORV Title Transfers

We're on the water side of Michigan, and boat deals fall apart over paperwork constantly. We prepare the bill of sale and transfer packet for boats, trailers, snowmobiles, and off-road vehicles.

    Quick Answer

Michigan titles most watercraft, and title transfers for boats, trailers, snowmobiles, and off-road vehicles go through the Secretary of State much like a car. The seller assigns the title, the buyer presents it with photo ID and payment for the title fee and any use tax, and the state issues a new title. Registration — the MC number decal on a boat — is a separate item from the title. Outboard motors and trailers are often titled separately from the hull, which is the single biggest thing private buyers miss. Clear Path prepares the bill of sale and transfer packet; we review your situation first, then send a written quote.

    Common mistakes to avoid

Small errors can cost you weeks. Here's what we see most often.

    • Treating the boat and the trailer as one item when they have separate titles.
    • Forgetting the outboard motor, which may need its own transfer.
    • Recording the wrong hull identification number, or copying it from the registration instead of the hull.
    • Confusing registration with title — the decal on the side is not proof of ownership.
    • Buying a boat at the end of the season and leaving the paperwork until spring, after the seller is unreachable.
    • No bill of sale on a cash deal at a launch ramp.

    Local Michigan considerations

Michigan watercraft are titled and registered through the Secretary of State, and registration renewal runs on its own cycle separate from the title. Trailers over a certain weight are titled in Michigan, which surprises buyers who assumed a trailer was just a piece of steel. Snowmobiles and ORVs have their own titling and trail-permit requirements. If you are buying at the end of the season, do the paperwork at the sale — chasing a seller for a signature in March is the most common problem we are called about.

    Key Terms

    Hull identification number
The unique identifier permanently attached to a boat hull, used the way a VIN is used on a vehicle.
    Watercraft registration
The annual state registration and decal that allows a boat to be operated in Michigan. Separate from the title.
    ORV
Off-road vehicle. Michigan titles ORVs and requires separate trail permits for certain uses.
