    Quick Answer

What do I need for a Michigan debt validation letter?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act you can demand validation of a debt in writing. If you send the request within 30 days of the collector's first contact, they must stop collection activity until they send verification. Always send it by certified mail and keep the green card.

    Documents to Gather

    Filing Steps, In Order

    1. 1.Note the date of the collector's first written contact
    2. 2.Send the validation request within 30 days if possible
    3. 3.Ask for the amount owed, the original creditor, and proof of their right to collect
    4. 4.Send by certified mail with return receipt — never by phone alone
    5. 5.Keep collection activity notes in case the collector violates the FDCPA
    6. 6.If they cannot validate, dispute the item with the credit bureaus

    Costs (Estimated)

No cost other than certified mail, roughly $8 per letter.
